Alcohol

When serving alcohol at a party, there are many things to take into consideration.

I. Service

Alcohol must be served by someone who is 21 or older and who is sober. All guests must be 21 or older to consume alcohol. Verify the age of your guests by checking government issued IDs. Once you’ve checked their IDs, you can use wristbands to distinguish your 21+ guests. You can get wristbands from OAPE or the Row Office. There cannot be more than 2 points of alcohol service at your party.

II. Serving Sizes

12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of hard liquor are each equivalent to one standard drink as they all contain the same amount of pure alcohol.

III. Limit Alcohol Amounts

Do not serve a person more than one alcoholic beverage at a time. When serving beer remember that a standard serving of beer is 12 ounces. It is helpful to use 12 ounce cups as opposed to 16 or 18 ounce cups so that guests can keep track of how much beer they’ve had to drink. When serving mixed drinks, be sure that servers use shot glasses to measure each drink. Do not allow guests to serve themselves or to leave events with alcoholic beverages. It’s also a great idea to stop serving one hour before the party is officially over and continue serving EANABs at that time.

V. Shots are NEVER permitted at campus parties.

In some cases with graduate students only, mixed drinks are permitted, though most party types are limited to beer and wine.

VI. Identify Intoxicated Individuals

Immediately stop serving them alcohol. Offer them EANABs and/or an escort home. If a person passes out due to intoxication, more serious medical attention may be necessary. If breathing is labored or if the person can’t be roused, immediately call 911 from any cell phone. Never just put an individual to bed and leave, or drive that person to the hospital yourself! Instead seek help from someone in the University. (See the following alcohol safety section.)
